"I'm pretty sure you won't remember me or my situation but as I look through old messages, I ran across yours. I felt that if I could share something positive with you about working hard to repay debt, it may serve as an inspiration for at least one other person. I struggled for several years trying to gain a foothold on my financial situation and with that hard work came the final payment that freed me from debt. I negotiated with each creditor and made the payments as agreed. There is one that has given me a hard time but what I have done is begun a payment process that will free me in just three months. The company would much rather have me make smaller payments that would go on for years and never take the debt away. I made a huge first payment and then I'll finish off with three more and it's over. The debt was just $1500 but the creditor sold the debt to a collection agency who threatened to raise that amount to over $4500. I held off to seek legal council and the company finally allowed me to make an offer. I paid off one of my vehicle loans leaving another but paid it several months ahead. I decided to do this so I can not only show a positive payment history, it will be paid of much earlier than the term of the contract saving a ton of interest. I have just 8 payments left on that loan. My utilities are paid as they arrive in the mail which hadn't been the case for years. I did try a credit counseling agency but it actually hurt me more than helped. I paid the agency every other week but they weren't satisfying all my creditors. They had reached agreements with 4 of 5 creditors but failed to let me know that one had refused to work with them. Since I expected that they had made an agreement with each creditor, I was paying the agency and not that company that had refused to accept the counseling agencies offers. This caused the interest and fees to continue to build without my actually knowing. I broke ties with that agency and took control myself. I finally got myself into a financial position whereas I could pay off each debt. I now live very well without the worry of where I was getting the money to pay my bills. It took a lot of really hard work and discipline, but it certainly is a good feeling to know that I am on the road to financial freedom. I'm saving for the first time in my life and it feels pretty good to know that I did that on my own and my financial situation is very manageable. I thought that sharing may help someone that thinks there is no way out of the credit jungle but it just takes some real hard work to make it all happen". Michael Sr.

"I liked my counselor. He was nice, friendly and offered a wealth of information. He provided doable step-by-step ideas to undertake. I did not feel overwhelmed, and feel like I am now heading in the right direction. I will definitely call again if I hit some stumbling blocks. Thank you"! Jeanine M. (Texas)
